The short answer

Yes, Bali is vegan friendly — more so than most people expect before they arrive. Between a large international wellness community, a strong cafe culture, and traditional Indonesian dishes that are naturally plant-based, eating vegan in Bali is rarely difficult.

Traditional Indonesian food already has vegan options

You don't need to rely only on Western-style vegan cafes. Dishes like gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce — ask for no egg/krupuk if strict), tempeh and tofu-based dishes, and many vegetable-forward sambals and stir-fries are naturally plant-based or easily adapted.

Where it's easiest

Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak have the highest concentration of dedicated vegan and vegetarian kitchens, cafes, and delivery-only concepts. Outside these areas, it gets a little more effort, but rarely impossible.

Do you need to speak Indonesian?

In the main tourist and expat hubs, no. Menus, staff, and delivery apps in Canggu, Ubud, Seminyak, and Kuta operate comfortably in English. It helps to know a couple of key words ("tanpa daging" = without meat), but it's rarely necessary.

Delivery apps make it even easier

Gojek and GrabFood both have strong vegan and vegetarian filtering, and plenty of kitchens — including ours — are delivery-only, meaning you don't even need to leave your villa to eat well.
